Overview

1st day : Marrakesh - Essaouira
Departing at 8 am. The driver will take the motor-way, passing thousands of Morocco-specific argane trees on the way to this blue and white, sea-side town and port. Essaouira is loved by tourists. Previously known as Mogador, it is a charming place with local handicrafts, especially thuja wood furniture, carvings, small artefacts, sold in the many shops along the windy streets.
At the sea front, you can chose some freshly caught fish and have it prepared right then. Essaouira is mild in the winter and cool in summer, although it is windy, surfers love it. We spend the night in a riad.

2nd day : Essaouira - Sidi Ifni
After breakfast, we take the coastal road south with beautiful views of the Atlantic, often battering rocks and sending up picturesque spray. We pass Agadir and continue south to Tiznit, this town is famous for its silver jewelry. We then take the coastal road to Sid Ifni. A gorgeous ride. This is a little charming blue and white town with a distinctly Spanish feel. It gets its name from a local holy man and was the capital of the Ait Ba’arame tribe famous for its resistance against the Spanish. We spend the night in a riad.

3rd day : Sidi Ifni - Tafraoute
From Sidi Ifni we turn north again to Tiznit, we will stop to explore the soukhs, thenn onto the Anti Atlas mountains, we pass Tighmi and the Kerdous pass, then Tizourhane until we reach Tafraoute. After we have breakfast we visit the famous painted rocks, coloured in 1984 by the Belgian artist, Jean Verame. Using 18 tons of blue, pink, red and black pain the was helped in this project by men from the Tafraoute fire-brigade. This is a work of art and has proved very controversial ; people marvel at it, some question its existence and some despise it. We head northwards continuing to follow the road to the Ait Baha river and the town of the same name. Then head towards Taroudant, “the little Marrakesh”, so called for the similarity of its ramparts and town walls to those of the “red city”. We spend the night here

5th day: Taroudant - Chagaga
We eat breakfast and then drive 90 km across the Sahara over the stony desert, “reg” and “hammada” and across the dried-up Lake Iriqui. In the middle of this lake, we can look for fossils. Right at the edge of the desert at Foum Zguid, we head north to Taznakht, famous for its Berber gelims and carpets, and this is where we have lunch. After crossing the Tizi-n-Ikhsane and Tizi-n-Tighatine passes, we arrive in Taliouine, the heart of the saffron growing region. The road takes us on to Taroudant and we stop and spend the night in a riad

6th day : Chagaga – Ouarzazate
We eat breakfast in the bivouac, we cross another 60 km of desert road by the Sacred Oassis, we arrive in M’hamid. We continue to Erg Lihoudi for a camel ride and then we have lunch outside the village before continuing to Dra’a Valley toward Zagoa. We stop to visit Kasbah Tamnougalte, the oldest Kasbah in the Dra'a Valley, it is somewhat inhabited. Our route is the ancient caravan road, it’s between the mountains and the river. We pass several villages and gardens. You can see the different ways of life along the Oases.
